Time to share another awesome project with you all! For this week’s How To’s Day, we are featuring our effortlessly cozy Simple Stripes Baby Blanket! Our Simple Stripes Baby Blanket is the perfect project for those who may be intimidated by quilting because the result is a beautiful patchwork design. This baby blanket is modern and chic with its, as the name suggests, simple striped pattern – you can choose to create a fun ombre effect with bold solids or perhaps tell a story using some novelty fabrics…the possibilities are infinite.

We chose to use our Playground Collection, which adds a whimsical and “playful” feel to the blanket. With its fun numbers, balloons, and playground attractions, this Playground baby blanket is perfect for any little nugget who loves adventure! :)

BAR STRIPES BABY BLANKET

SUPPLIES:
– 1-1/4 yds of Playground quilting cotton (44” wide) from Camelot Fabrics in 1140606 #1 (Fabric L)
– 1/8 yd of each of the following Playground quilting cottons:
Fabric B: 1140601 #1
Fabric C: 1140602 #2
Fabric D: 1140603 #2
Fabric E: 1140603 #3
Fabric F: 1140604 #3
Fabric G: 1140602 #1
Fabric H: 1140601 #2
Fabric I: 1140605 #2
Fabric J: 1140601 #3
Fabric K: 1140605 #3
– 1-1/3 yds of Fresh Solids quilting cotton (44” wide) from Camelot Fabrics in 214-0001 White (Fabric A)
– Basic sewing supplies: Sewing machine, needle & coordinating thread, iron & pressing surface, scissors & fabric shears, and straight pins

NOTES:
1. Please wash, dry & iron your fabric before beginning, and trim the selvages.
2. Unless otherwise indicated, use a 1/4” seam allowance throughout.
3. Unless otherwise indicated, all seams are sewn with the fabrics’ Right Sides together.4. WOF = Width of Fabric.

ASSEMBLY:
1. Sew the Bars together top-to-bottom as shown, taking care that all directional prints are oriented in the same way. Press the seams toward the darker of each pair of fabrics.
This creates the blanket’s Center Block

.

2. Measure the Center Block’s height (top of Fabric B to bottom of Fabric K). It should be 40” tall, but yours may be a little tall or shorter. Trim any excess width so that the Center is a square.
3. Cut a square from your Fabric L (Backing) fabric, the same size as the Center Block.

4. Sew (1) Fabric A strip to the top of the Center Block, and (1) to the bottom. Trim these strips to match the width of the Center and press the seams toward the Center Block.
5. Sew Fabric A strips to the top & bottom of the Backing square, trim them, and press the seams toward the Backing, just as you did with the Center Block in Step 4.

6. Sew Fabric A strips to the left- & right-hand sides of the Center Block, trim any excess height, and press the seams away from the Center.
7. Repeat Step 6 with the Backing, but press the seams open.

8. Lay out your batting on the floor or another large surface and place the (2) faces of your blanket on top of it, Right Sides together.
Check that all edges of the blanket’s faces are aligned and pin the (3) layers together around all (4) sides. Trim any excess batting.
9. Sew all layers together around all (4) edges with a 1/2” seam allowance, but leave a 6” gap in one side for turning.

10. Clip your corners and turn the blanket Right Side out. Poke the corners all the way out with a knitting needle or the end of a pencil.
11. Topstitch around the edges of your blanket, including the gap from Step 9, with a 1/16” seam allowance.

12. Pin through all layers of the blanket at 4” intervals along each Center Block seam, as shown by the red dots.
13. At each pin, tack a short line of stitches through all layers of your blanket, sewing directly over the existing seam line (stitching “in the ditch”). Backstitch to lock these little seams in place. When finished, the seams should be almost invisible.
Tip: instead of cutting your thread after each tack, simply lift your machine’s foot and maneuver the point of the next line of stitches into place. Just make sure to trim the threads between all those tacks when you’re finished!
