How To’s Day: Whimsical Quilt by The Quilted Button

September 29th, 2015 by Camelot Fabrics

Hi everyone,

Happy Tuesday! I hope you all are having a lovely day. Today is National Coffee Day, and though I am not a huge coffee drinker (tea for me, please!), the smell of coffee however, is quite heavenly. Mmm…

For this week’s How To’s Day, we are sharing our Whimsical Quilt by The Quilted Button. The Whimsical Quilt is a 3×4-block quilt pattern, each square composed of alternately-placed rectangles and squares. The completed quilt pattern has a super fun, “whimsical” feel to it – which makes for a great quilt to use with lots of fabric designs. We chose to feature our The Beach House by Jack!e McFee Collection with our Whimsical Quilt. We love the oceanic-feel of the quilt, especially in the tide colorway, which would be perfect for a beach home or sea-inspired room. Such a gorgeous quilt!

OTHER TOOLS & SUPPLIES
2-1/4 yds quilt batting (58” wide)
Rotary Cutter, Mat, Rulers (a 15-1/2” square ruler would be helpful), Straight Pins, Sewing machine, and threads to match your fabrics.

SEWING THE BLOCKS
Note: The same method is used for sewing each block, except that Blocks B, D, F, H, J & L are sewn with the fabrics’ patterns “upside down” as these blocks will be rotated 180° in the quilt’s final assembly. Use the Cover image and the Block Layout on page 6 as guides, and sew (1) block at a time.

1. Sew (1) Sashing 1” x 4-1/2” rectangle to the Bottom of (1) 4-1/2” x 7” rectangle. Add (1) 4-1/2” square below the Sashing.

whimsical3

2. Sew (1) Sashing 1” x 11-1/2” rectangle and (1) 7” x 11-1/2” rectangle to the Left of this unit to measure 11-1/2” square.

whimsical4

3. Sew (1) 1” x 11-1/2” Sashing rectangle to the Bottom of this square.

whimsical5

4. Sew (1) 4” x 11-1/2” rectangle to the Bottom of the Sashing just sewn to measure 11-1/2” x 15-1/2”.

whimsical6

5. Sew (1) 1” x 15-1/2” Sashing rectangle to the Right side of this composite rectangle.

whimsical7

6. Sew (1) 4” x 15-1/2” rectangle to the Sashing just sewn to finish at 15-1/2” square. This completes Block A; all other blocks are sewn in the same manner, using different fabrics as indicated in the Block Layout diagram. Remember to pay special attention to the blocks’ orientation!

QUILT CENTER

Row 1 – Block A, Fabric R 1” x 15-1/2” Vertical Sashing, Block B, Fabric R 1” x 15-1/2” Vertical Sashing, Block C to measure 46-1/2” x 15-1/2”.

Rows 2, 3, and 4 are prepared exactly the same as Row 1, except that they use the remaining blocks as shown in the Block Layout.

Sew the rows together by inserting a Fabric R Horizontal Sashing strip (1” x 46-1/2”) between each row to finish the quilt center at 46-1/2” x 62”.
