Time for this week’s How To’s Day! Today we are sharing a beautiful crossbody tutorial: our Polygon Bag by Made by Marion. Our Polygon Bag is a clean, two-toned foldover design that features a long body strap, grommet details, and an interior zipper to hold your essentials. The straps can easily be removed, so it can also be used as a “night on the town” clutch. Its simple and lightweight design will make it your new, throw-on-and-go bag. We chose to use two mustard print from our Heirloom collection for the bag’s shell, which gave the Polygon bag a classic and rich feel!

SUPPLIES:
– Shell – 5/8 yd of Heirloom quilting cotton (44” wide) in 2142605 #3
– Accent – fat eighth of 2142602 #3
– Lining – 5/8 yd of 2142602 #1
– 7“ – 9” closed-end zipper
– (2) 1/2” metal grommets; ball & socket
– Grommet tool
– Hammer
– (2) 1” swivel hooks
– Paper printer
– Basic sewing supplies:
• Sewing machine with a zipper foot
• Needle & coordinating thread
• Iron & pressing surface
• Scissors & fabric shears
• Straight pins
• Fabric marker

NOTES:
1. Please wash, dry & iron your fabric before beginning.
2. Unless otherwise directed, sew all seams with a 1/2” seam allowance.
3. RST = Right Sides Together.
4. WOF = Width of Fabric.

CUTTING:
1. Print the Polygon Bag Template at 100% size. Measure the Test Square to make sure your pattern was printed at the correct scale.
2. Trim the pattern pieces along the marked borders, and join them according to the numbered triangles. Cut out the pieces.
3. Pin & cut the templates from your fabric as indicated on the pattern pieces. The arrow on each template piece should run parallel to the selvages, in the same direction as the fabric’s grain.
4. Cut (1) 4” x WOF strip from your Shell fabric, for the Strap.

THE STRAP:
1. Fold & press the Strap piece in half lengthwise, Wrong Sides facing, and unfold.

2. Fold each long edge to the center crease, and press.

3. Fold the strip in half lengthwise, so the folded edges are together, and press.

4. Topstitch the (2) long edges of the Strap with a 1/8” seam allowance.

5. Fold (1) end of the Strap around the bar of your swivel hook and topstitch it in place as shown. Repeat with the second end, making sure that both ends are folded against the same face of the Strap.

ASSEMBLY:

1. Sew the Accent piece to the top of the Back Shell piece as shown, RST. Press the seam open.

SETTING THE ZIPPER

1. Place your zipper against the top edge of the Front Lower piece as shown, and mark the beginning & end of the zip’s teeth on the fabric’s Wrong Side.

2. Sew the Front Upper piece to the Front Lower piece, leaving a gap for the zipper between the (2) marks you made in Step 1. Press the seam open, including the gap.

3. Pin & sew the zipper into the gap, with the Right Side of the zipper tape againt the seam allowances of the Shell pieces.

4. Place the Right Side of the Lining Upper piece against the Wrong Side of the zipper tape as shown, on the side of the zipper that is sewn to the Shell Upper piece. With your zipper foot installed, sew the Lining Upper piece to the zipper tape & Shell seam allowance. Stitch as close as you can to the seam which joins the zipper to the Shell.

Begin & end this seam 1/2” from the fabric’s edge.

5. Repeat Step 5 to sew the Lining Lower piece to the remaining zipper tape.

6. Open the zipper, if it’s closed.

7. Pin & sew the Lining Back to the Lining Upper & Lower around all (4) edges, RST. Sew only through the Lining, not the Shell, and leave a 4” gap at the bottom edge for turning.
Note: we suggest sewing this seam with the Lining Back on the bottom. This way, when you reach the zipper seam, you can easily pull the edge of the Shell out of the way.

8. Pin & sew the Shell Back to the Shell Upper & Lower around all (4) edges, RST. Sew only through the Shell, not the Lining, and don’t leave any gap.
Once again, we suggest sewing with the Back piece on the bottom, so you can easily move the edge of the Lining out of the way.

9. Clip your corners and press the seams open.

10. Turn the work Right Side out through the gap in the Lining’s bottom edge, and topstitch the gap closed.

11. Fold the top of the bag down to just above the bottom edge, so the accent strip is showing and the zipper is covered. Mark a small “X” at each top corner as shown, 1” down from the fold.

12. Install a grommet at each X, according to the manufacturer’s directions. The grommet should pass through all layers, so it keeps the flap folded at the top of the bag.

13. Clip the strap’s hooks through the grommets, and you’re good to go!
