December 2nd, 2014 by Camelot Fabrics

Hi everyone,

Happy Tuesday!! We hope everyone is having a wonderful day so far, and didn’t go too crazy with yesterday’s Cyber Monday. If you did, no worries…it’s the last day to enter our Winsday, and we are giving away our Spectrum FQ Bundle this week. Be sure to enter here!

It’s time for this week’s How To’s Day! Today we are featuring our fantastic No Sew Mod Tote on the blog. This adorable tote is a no-sew project, so it is the perfect beginner craft and for making with kids. As well, the mod look makes it super stylish and classic – the ideal bag for carrying your lunch with you!

The ducked tape interior is great for any spills because you can easily wipe it away clean with a cloth. Super convenient, super easy to make, and super stylish – what more could you want? :)

TOOLS & SUPPLIES:
– 1/3 yard of London Fog quilting cotton (44” wide) from Camelot Fabrics in 2141505 #3
– Several yards of duct tape
- Non-precious scissors – do NOT use your expensive fabric shears on duct tape!
– Craft knife & cutting mat
– Stapler with staples
– Metal ruler
– Pencil

NOTES:
To keep your scissors clean when working with duct tape, we recommend wiping the blades periodically with rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball.

CUTTING:
1. Cut (1) 22” x 12” rectangle from your cotton.
2. Mark 4” from each corner, and join the marks with diagonal lines as shown. Cut along these lines.

3. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, then widthwise. Draw a half-oval for the handle as shown, with the center line of the oval flush against the fold lines (indicated by dashed lines). The half-oval should be 1-1/2” deep, 1-1/2” tall, and its top edge should be 1-1/2” from the top edge of the fabric.
Unfold the work.

ASSEMBLY:
1. Cover the Wrong Side of the fabric with strips of duct tape, slightly overlapping the edges of the tape. Trim the tape so it’s flush with the edges of the fabric.

2. Place a strip of tape along the Right Side of each edge, overlapping the edge of the fabric by about 1/4”. Fold the edge, Wrong Sides together, so that about 1/8” of the fabric’s Right Side is showing on the taped side of the work, and tape in place. Trim any excess tape.

Repeat for all remaining straight edges.

3. Cut a 6” piece of duct tape into several 1” x 1-1/2” rectangles. Use these tabs to fold back & secure the edges of the handles, in the same manner as you secured the straight edges.

4. Fold the project in half, Right Sides together, with the edges aligned. Staple the sides together as shown.
5. Wrap a strip of tape around each stapled edge, and trim any excess.

6. Finger – press the bottom corners of the bag, taking care to line up the stapled “seams”. Fold the corners up against the side seams, 1-1/2” from the corner points, and tape in place.
7. Turn the bag cotton-side out, and you’re done!
