How To’s Day: Chalkboard Fabric Banner
November 19th, 2013 by admin
Hi everyone!
Happy Tuesday! We hope everyone is having a super, fantastic day. The season of holidays is coming up, and with the holidays come lots and lots of parties and reasons to celebrate. Of course we aren’t ones to complain; trust us, we love a good party, but we appreciate any way to make party planning a little easier (and a little more cost-effective!).
For toaday’s How To’s Day post, we are sharing with you our Chalkboard Fabric Banner Tutorial, using our chalkboard fabric. Now you can host a multitude of parties, while changing up the same banner…how awesome is that? Let’s get sewing!

CHALKBOARD FABRIC BANNER TUTORIAL:
Approximate Crafting Time: 1-2 hr project
Skill Level: Beginner
Finished Size: 3 yards long x 8” tall
Supplies:
– 12” of 48” wide chalkboard fabric
– 3 yards of coordinating double-fold bias binding
– Paper printer
– Chalk
– Hairspray or artist’s fixative spray*
– Basic sewing supplies: sewing machine, needle & coordinating thread, straight pins, measuring tape, scissors & fabric shears, fabric marker
*While hairspray is convenient and effective for fixing your chalk marks in place, it will eventually discolor your banner. For best results over time, we recommend using acid-free artist’s fixative, available at most craft & art supply stores.
Instructions:
1. Print out the Bunting Flag Template at 100% size. Cut out the template and trace it 14 times onto the Wrong Side of your chalkboard fabric. Cut out these pieces.
2. Sew the Flags together in pairs, Wrong Sides together, with a 1/2” seam allowance. Trim the edges if needed to make them flush with each other.
3. If you plan to erase and re-write the message on your banner in the future, prepare the chalkboard fabric by coloring the entire surface of each flag with the side of a piece of chalk and wiping if off with a dry cloth. If you’d like your message to be permanent, skip this step.
4. Cut a 6 1/2 foot long piece from your bias tape and hem the ends with a 1/4” rolled hem.
5. Fold this piece in half lengthwise to find its center, which you’ll mark. Pin the short side of one Flag between the folds of the bias tape with the Flag centered at this mark. Pin the remaining six Flags’ short edges into the tape, three on either side of the first Flag, spaced at 1” intervals. Stitch the Flags in place with a continuous stitch along the bias tape, 1/4” from its open edge; backstitch at both ends.
6. Write your message on the Flags in chalk. If you want to prevent the chalk from smudging, spray the banner in a well-ventilated space with hairspray or artist’s fixative.
We hope you have enjoyed today’s How To’s Day tutorial. It’s simple and easy to do but you will create the perfect accessory to any party, and save yourself from extra hassle and cost. Here’s to all the fun and festive celebrations we are looking forward to!
If you create this banner, be sure to send us a picture at info@camelotfabrics.com or you can tweet us a picture. We always LOVE seeing your projects using our fabric. There are so many possibilities with chalkboard fabric, so send us any suggestions to what you would create with it too.
